Ram Spare Tire

I tried to put a 20" full size alloy wheel that matches the wheels on my 2015 Dodge Ram truck up in the spare tire area, but the retainer at the end of the cable was too large for the alloy wheel center hole. So it looks like I am stuck with the 17" temporary spare that it came with from the factory.

I noticed that the spare was a Falcon 275/65/18 (32.1”) on a on steel rim, which is 1.1” smaller than my OEM DuraTrac 275/70/18 (33.2”). Why would Ram provide a smaller spare tire, especially on a truck that is equipped with an electronically locking rear differential?

Sometime by the time the '10 came out, they changed the spare to a fake tire. I actually traded wheels and tires with guy that had a '15 ram that came with 17" aluminum wheels. We also traded spares, so he got the temporary one, but I received a full size tire from his stock one. If you have 22" wheels and your spare wheel is a 15" it would not matter (well it would because anything smaller than 17" won't fit over our brake calipers), as long as the tire had the same diameter. Problem is Ram puts 33s on the 20" wheels and 31.5s on the 17" spare wheels they come with. If you have an LSD don't put the spare on the back axle

I have a 20" under mine. Steel spare wheel tire combo from a 3rd gen. Same size tire as my other 4. Fits no problem.
